Hi Nate!

Cultivating a singing body would be at the top of my list (Eph 5:19). When the body sings out it breaks down the walls of personal worship. When God's children sing and sing well it's hard to ignore.

What do you do to make corporate worship truly corporate rather than just an assisted personal worship experience?

Being a novice at advise on music, I found that educationalists sometime try to hard that they miss the simplicity of the leading of the Holy Spirits need to minister to those in need through music. When in tune
it seems the sermon confirms the natural flow from the music ministry to the needs of the body?
unity, healing, compassion, needs on and on.If your looking for high church format hymns by all means.
At the Cross, Love lifted me, Jesus savior of my soul,I find to minister then and now?
As Charles Spergon,G Whit field, DL,Moody, were different we appreciate there Spirit given words / works
Billy Gram, Sister Teresa,J Mc Arthur,Charles Stanley, etc will be enjoyed and appreciate as well.
I believe the Spirit imputes the words and music to the heart. While using people then now and to come in all aspects of his body ministeries

Hi Nate,

Thanks for reading and posting. I agree it is hard to assess a weight to these three questions and that's why I think of them more as guidelines rather then hard and fast rules. For example, I will occasionally (very occasionally) use Open the Eyes of My Heart (a Biblical phrase by the way). It's lite on content and it only has moderate musically value but it's still Biblical and a lot of people enjoy singing it. There are a lot of really good songs out there so selecting a song like Open the Eyes of My Heart is certainly the exception and not the rule.

I go through a similar process when adding to the library. Content, music, singability/likeability. It's hard to assess a weight to these 3. If it has good content, and good music, but the congregation is unresponsive; is it really usable. We have a blended worship service and there are certain songs we don't do because I know the congregation just doesn't feel it. On the other hand there are some that I know they might like to sing but the content is pretty sub-par. What then? Sometimes those songs that are light in content might actually evoke an emotional response that another content heavy song would not. As I add songs to the library that don't fit all 3 of those categories I make sure I have a specific purpose for them. If it's content heavy but difficult to sing, I better have a good reason that I'm imposing this song on 275 people. If the song is content light but fun to sing, I better have a good reason for using it. Generally songs that fall in either of those categories don't make the batting order very often.

Hi Candace!

This used to be a weak area for me as well. Everything started to change for me when I put point Three, "Quote Scripture and others", into practice. Leaning on the words of others took a lot of pressure off of me. This allowed my to get more comfortable with just speaking infront of others.

A great resource for this is Oswald Chambers' book My Utmost For His Highest. There is an index of scripture references in the back. If you know what the sermon text is you can look it up in the index and read a comment from Chambers that will lead into the sermon.
